Attic black figure Mastoid

circa 500 BC.
Orange-brown clay with painting in alternating shades of black to red-brown and remnants of white and red additional paint. Thin-walled, circular drinking beaker with a small base and a narrow, flared lip. On both sides, between a dominant pair of eyes, an enthroned Dionysus with a drinking horn and a large crown of vine leaves on his head. An ivy leaf between each pair of eyes. The term mastoid for the shape of the vessel comes from the Greek word ΜΑΣΤΟΣ for the female breast.
Dimension: height: 7,8 cm, diameter: 9,3 cm,
Condition: Two short, non-continuous hairline cracks from the edge to the shoulder. A few minor scratches to the surface, otherwise intact and in very fine condition.
Provenance: German private collection, acquired 1977 in the Art Trade.
