Hellenistic Oil Lamp
2nd century BC
Bronze with shiny olive green patina. Disc-shaped body from which a long tubular spout with a heart-shaped opening emerges. A narrow ridge on the tube divides at the muzzle and at the filler opening into two finely scrolled volutes. The two strands of the handle originate on the lamp shoulder from ivy leaves and end after a Heracles knot in a large vine leaf. An exceptionally elaborate specimen, with the entire decoration executed in the most meticulous cold work.
Dimension: length: 19,2 cm, width: 9,3 cm, height: 7,5 cm
Condition: Some small casting flaws in the underside of the snout. Otherwise exquisitely preserved with smooth, shiny surface and very nice patina.
Provenance: German private collection G. S., Berlin, since the 1960s / 1970s.
