Roman Lion Head Fitting

2nd – 3rd century A.D.

 

Bronze with malachite green patina. Expressive lion protome worked in high relief with bared teeth and wide-open mouth in which hangs a profiled ring. All details such as the shaggy mane, eyes and fur structure executed in cold work. Three holes in the rim for attachment to a door or sarcophagus. Removably mounted on a custom base of museum quality finish.

 

Dimension: height: 18,3 cm, width: 18,3 cm, depth: 6,7 cm

Condition: Intact and very well preserved.

Provenance: German private collection G. v. O., since the 1980s.
