Roman miniature balsamarium

1st century A.D.

Bronze with lustrous patina. Bust of a young Nubian emerging from a chalice of leaves. The long locks of his curly hair are well arranged in tiers. His short small goatee beard forms a counterpoint to his youthful face which has been modeled with exceptional skill. Two small loops were intended for attaching a carrying handle.

Dimension: height 6,2 cm, width 4 cm

Condition: One of the loops broken off in antiquity, lid and flat metal sheet bottom missing. Apart from that intact and extremely well preserved.

Provenance: Austrian private collection, Vienna, since the 1980s.
