2. 2nd half oft he 4th century BC.

 

Ovoid vessel on a short stemmed foot. Two loop-shaped raised strap handles from the sloping rim to the shoulder. Orange-brown clay with a red coating and painted in glossy black as well as white and ochre-yellow. On one side, an unclothed youth holding a large bunch of grapes in his left hand and a mirror in his right. On the other side is a young woman dressed in a long, belted chiton. She holds a wreath of flowers in her left hand and a mirror in her right. Below each of the handles is a large palmette bordered by volutes at the sides. The nestoris is a cult vessel that originally came from Messapian pottery and was also adopted in Apulia in the 4th century BC.

 

 

 

Dimension: height: 15,8 cm, diameter: 11 cm, width: 14,5 cm

Condition: Intact and in very fine condition.

Provenance: German private collection since 1995, ex collection Dr. Christof Roselt, Burg a. d. Wupper.
