North Syrian Idol
€ 1700
3rd millennium BC.
Sand-colored clay. Female figure with a pillar-shaped body that widens downwards to form a curved base. The stumps of the arms, which are pierced to accommodate attributes, are depicted strongly shortened at shoulder height and angled forwards. A broad necklace around the neck. The bird-like face is dominated by a protruding nose and large, disc-shaped eyes with pierced pupils give the statuette an intense, penetrating gaze. A crown-like, four-pointed Polos on the head symbolizes the figure's elevated rank. Idols of this type were particularly common in northern Syria and served as votive offerings and household gods.
